One day at a time, sweet Jesus
That’s all I’m asking from You
Just give me the strength to do every day
What I have to doYesterday’s gone sweet Jesus
Tomorrow may never be mine
Lord help me today, show me the way
One day at a time
Remember the country song by Marijohn Wilkin and Marty Raybon? The first five words of the chorus are definitely a well known quote especially for people going through difficult times. For some people, it may not be “one day” at a time but it may even be “one hour” at a time if things are particularly arduous.
Some of you may know that I’m going through a challenging time at the moment and I’m learning to focus on today only. I try to achieve something every day and today’s achievement is writing this blog. Many people have told me to take everything “one day at a time” and to rejoice in my past achievements, no matter how small they may be. Looking to the future can be overwhelming so just focus on today.
Perhaps there is a mountain that you are currently climbing and you think that you will never get to the top of it. But if you break it up into tiny pieces (or days), you are more likely to get to the top as you are making progress towards the top every day. It’s better to do something towards your goal than to sit back and do nothing.
The sun is shining today so head outside and enjoy it. Even if all you do is read a chapter of your book, drink a cup of tea or call a friend. We aren’t guaranteed sunshine next week – indeed I’ve been told to expect rain – so make the most of today’s sunshine while you can! According to Professor Ming Kuo from the University of Illinois, being outdoors for as little as 20 minutes can trigger measurable changes inside your body from lowering stress hormones, easing blood pressure and even improving your gut health. And that’s no bad thing.
