North Down Coastal Path

The North Down Coastal Path starts at Holywood Esplanade in the east and finishes at Orlock Point which is east of Groomsport. Even though the whole path stretches for 16 miles, my regular walk starts at the Seafront Road in Cultra near the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club.

Keeping the sea on your left, walk in an easterly direction towards Bangor. You will pass many beautiful houses on your right before spotting the green fencing of the Royal Belfast Golf Club. The path then becomes more rugged and narrow as well as slightly uphill. It reminds me of the North Antrim Coast Road except this is just for walkers, runners and cyclists. I usually walk to the grounds of Rockport School where I turn around and head back to the car.

Key Facts

  • The path is relatively flat but there are some small hills. It can be mucky too as a high tide can wash copious amounts of seaweed on to the path.
  • It is a popular route with walkers and cyclists so listen out for bicycle bells alerting you of a cyclist behind you.
  • While there are no formal seats along the route, there are lots of rocks to have a rest on.
  • Car parking is available on the Seafront Road and it is free.
  • The total walk distance is about 4.3 miles and lasts 80 minutes.

What not to miss

  • The invigorating sea breeze – it can be chilly so make sure you wrap up warmly.
  • Fantastic scenery of Belfast Lough including many sea birds and the occasional seal.
  • Watch the passing ships (including the Stena Ferry), planes landing at Belfast City Airport, yachts and wind surfers.
  • Head to Home Bird in Holywood afterwards for a coffee and a caramel square.
